Aishwarya Rai: Bollywood Actress Again In Controversy About Her Weight

Aishwarya Rai: Bollywood Actress Again In Controversy About Her Weight
Aishwarya Rai is again finding herself at the center of a controversy about the place of female actors in Bollywood and the demand placed on them to lose weight quickly.
The 40-year-old actress, who had been criticized in the past for not losing weight after the birth of her child, has sparked a new controversy when filmmaker Prahlad Kakkar openly said she isn’t thin enough to take on an upcoming role.
Kakkar has been working with Rai’s husband, Abhishek Bachchan, and while he said he’s looking forward to Aishwarya being part of the project, he made her weight a central concern.
“I don’t care if my film is her comeback film or not. It’ll just be good to have her on board, but she has to lose a little more weight, as she has to play a 21-year-old, and age till 29,” Kakkar said. “Her character will also be pregnant with twins.
Right now, it’s difficult for her to do all that because she’s a hands-on mom. Her daughter is still very young, and it’ll be a logistical nightmare for her to travel or stay out of town for two months to shoot outdoors.”
The comments have ignited a controversy in Bollywood, with many saying that directors and producers are placing an unfair burden on female actresses.
This week, director Sujoy Ghosh also replaced actress Vidya Balan in his upcoming project, reportedly because of her pregnancy. The move has drawn attention to Bollywood’s “pregnancy clause,” which shuts out actresses who are pregnant.
In an interview to Mid-Day, veteran actress Hema Malini said, “Today the no pregnancy clause should be made mandatory, but only for a certain time period, say a maximum of six months. If the artiste gets pregnant before the film goes on the floors, she should inform the producer. But if the film gets delayed for other reasons, then it’s wrong to expect the actress to wait. She can’t be held responsible in such a situation.”
Ashwarya Rai was again in the midst of controversy in 2012, when several critcs complained that she had a “duty” to her fans to lose weight after the birth of her child. Many fans ridiculed her for not losing weight, including one who put together a video showing pictures of Rai after gaining weight set to elephant noises.
Many of the tens of thousands of people to view the video agreed. “She is a Bollywood actress and it is her duty to look good and fit,” one video commenter wrote. Another suggested she “needs to learn from people like Victoria Beckham who are back to size zero weeks after their delivery.”
Despite the controversy, Aishwarya Rai has forged on. This week the face of Kalyan Jewellers helped to inaugurate three new showrooms of the brand in New Delhi.

Weight Loss Resistance and Choices

Weight is not a behavior, and weight is not a choice. Nobody wakes up and decides what to weigh today. In an age when healthy and unhealthy behaviors are increasingly subject to incentives and disincentives, respectively, this is all too easily forgotten.
Of course, weight is largely the by-product of behaviors and choices, namely what and how much we eat, and what and how much we do: calories in, and calories out. But the simple math of energy balance and the simple premise that our choices are in charge of it are complicated by two considerations.
First is that the choices we make are in turn dependent on the choices we have, and in the case of energy balance, all of modern culture conspires against good choices. In particular, foods designed to be all but addictive and maximize the calories it takes to feel full- designed with the aid of such powerful technologies as functional MRI scanning no less- are a potent sabotage of personal responsibility and good choices.
Second, two people may make the very same choices and wind up at very different weights. As a clinician with some 25 years of direct patient care experience, I can say categorically that two people can eat the same amount and exercise the same amount, yet one gets fat and one stays thin. This, of course, is not at all fair. But we have all, I trust, been around that block a time or two; we know life isn’t necessarily fair. Or at best, it’s fairly unfair over time, as bad things happen all too often to thin people, too.
Let’s quickly acknowledge that differential weight outcomes despite comparable diet and activity levels do nothing to repudiate the laws of thermodynamics. The relationship between matter and energy characterized initially by Newton is a basic tenet of physics, and all but unassailable. Certainly, it is stationed well above the pay grade of New Age iconoclasts who debate the relevance of calories to no valuable end. Yes, calories do count. They are a measure of energy, and anyone wanting to contest the relationship between energy and matter has to go toe to toe with Sir Isaac. He’s never lost yet.
There is no need to revisit laws of physics to explain the paradox of differential weight outcomes; we need only visit the local car dealership. We are well accustomed to the list of attributes highlighted when cars are on sale, and among these is fuel efficiency. Obviously, it varies. That does not alter the properties of the fuel. It does not challenge the reliable meaning of a gallon or liter. It merely indicates that not all engines are created equal.
That is exactly true of the human engine, our metabolism, as well. We vary markedly in fuel efficiency due to various factors. Some are as obvious as our heritage. There are whole populations, such as the Pima Indians of the American Southwest (and originally, Mexico) whose ancestors adapted to survive in a very frugal desert environment, who are remarkably fuel efficient. Such groups, notably including many Native Americans and Pacific Islanders such as the Samoans, gain weight with stunning ease when exposed to modern living, and shed pounds very laboriously.
Underlying such ethnic variation is, of course, genetic variation- so variable response to particular doses of calories in and calories out is partly explained by genes. It is partly explained by body composition as well, which is in turn partly explained by still other genes, as well as experiential factors. A higher mass of muscle increases the calories needed to maintain weight; a lower mass of muscle and higher fat content has the opposite effect.
And then still other factors, some known and some doubtless yet unknown, influence weight outcomes in ways we are just beginning to appreciate. One that is well established is hormonal responses, in particular that of insulin. People who need higher levels of insulin to maintain normal blood sugar are preferentially disposed to deposit calories into body fat, and gain weight. Weight gain then tends to worsen insulin resistance, and this very readily becomes a degenerating, and very frustrating, spiral.
A more recent and increasingly salient consideration is the status of our microbiome, the bacteria that colonize our bodies, and especially our gastrointestinal tract. We have long known that bacteria outnumber our cells roughly 10 to 1, and figure importantly in digestion. We are learning all the time how important they are to other body functions as well, from immune responses to hormonal balance.
One of the new frontiers in medicine is the recognition that significant alterations of the gastrointestinal flora can produce significant alterations in weight. In some cases, it can apparently result in extreme weight loss resistance.
I have had patients in this category, people who eat very frugally, exercise strenuously, and just can’t seem to take off weight. Of course, sometimes people seemingly in this category are telling themselves and their doctor, perhaps inadvertently, little white lies- exaggerating how few calories they consume, or how much they exercise. But among my weight loss resistant patients are some who have undergone full metabolic testing, verifying the truth of their claims. Some people are almost shockingly fuel efficient, vulnerable to weight gain, and resistant to weight loss.
This frustrating problem prompted me to create an on-line exchange for those affected, so a community could come together and benefit from the ‘hive mind.’ I invite any in this camp to visit the site, and I invite experts in this area to contact me via email to explore the possibility of sharing that expertise. My thanks in advance to those who do so.
There are cases, few and far between thus far, where extreme weight loss resistance has been linked to disruption of gastrointestinal flora, due to antibiotics or some other trauma. And, in some cases, the still extreme option of fecal transplant- introducing a full suite of normal intestinal bacteria- has proven therapeutic. Lesser instances of the same basic problem may respond well to probiotics, prebiotics, or a combination.
In some cases drugs, such as the diabetes drug metformin, may prove useful; metformin enhances insulin sensitivity, and has a potential role in treating insulin resistance in addition to diabetes. In some cases, nutrient supplements may be appropriate. Cinnamon can help stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels. Green coffee bean extract appears thus far to be a safe and effective means to boost metabolism slightly. Garcinia cambogia may help attenuate appetite, among other effects. A product called PGX made from dietary fiber can blunt the glycemic effect of food.
The right response to weight loss resistance will vary. In some cases, it will be learning to love the skin you’re in- not everyone who wants to lose weight really needs to do so. If you carry extra pounds but are fit and vital and healthy, perhaps you can and should learn to accept rather than fight your ‘natural’ weight, shape, and size; your life may be better if you do.
For those who can’t or won’t accept their weight, or whose health is compromised by it, the options for addressing weight loss resistance should be explored with a health care professional who knows what they are doing. The approach should be individualized, and given the limits to our current knowledge, will likely involve some trial and error. But it can result in success, so keep the faith.
Weight loss resistance is real; I’ve seen it, up close and intimately.
Weight, per se, is not a choice. Addressing the variable challenge of weight management with insight, understanding, and compassion certainly is. It’s a choice we should all be making.

Jennifer Hudson weighs in on how she lost 80 pounds and keeps them off

Jennifer Hudson says learning the 'how' of losing weight and the importance of staying active have made all the difference.

In regard to weight, Jennifer Hudson's biggest concern these days might be finding a shelf sturdy enough to bear the weight of her numerous awards. Her Oscar and Grammy wins represent but a small portion of the recognition she has received. But body weight has been a concern for her in the past. And it was Weight Watchers, for which she appears in ads, and developing a sense of play about physical activity that helped her lose 80 pounds and keep it off.
Were you heavy as a child, or did the weight come on later?
I was actually a very petite child, and I was very active. I think all kids were active back then, but we weren't really conscious of it. We took gym class, and I also had ballet. But in my teens I started to gain weight. It was in high school, but it just seemed normal. That was the way we were. I didn't see anything wrong with it, and I never knew there was a problem or that it was anything to be alarmed about. I didn't realize how important health was until I was in Hollywood.
What was it that made you choose Weight Watchers?
We had a meeting, and they explained the program to me, and it really sounded like a fit for me. It turned out to be perfect, and without them I wouldn't have gotten nearly as far. My favorite thing is that it teaches you the "how" of losing weight, and prepares you for any situation. Now it's a lifestyle. You learn how to make it work for you. It's not restricting. It's very flexible and realistic. It really has been life changing for me.
Are you still involved with them – still doing the meetings?
I have my leader. Because of my lifestyle, my meetings are one on one, but I do go to some meetings. I don't get to go as often as I like to. And I always hear something inspiring and encouraging, so I do like to go when I can. I like to hear other people's stories. It helps keep you motivated.
What role did physical activity play in your weight loss?
When it comes to trainers, I don't like when people impose their ideals on you. I didn't want to live inside of a gym. I just like to be active. If you work out too much, then you hurt and you don't want to go back, so I just decided to create fun activities instead. The other day I was running up and down the stairs of my house. I did it 10 times, and next time I'll try to do it 15 times. It's not about what a trainer wants you to do. It's about what works for you.
What other kind of activities are you into these days?
I love running, but mostly I approach life that moving is better than doing nothing. I take stairs instead of the elevator. I'll get up and dance. I just try to move as much as possible. I also consider shopping part of my activities because you're not thinking about eating — you're moving around. I'm all about having fun when I'm moving around.
I love to play basketball because it doesn't feel like work and I get to play with my son, so it just fits into my life. If you find an activity that's fun and you enjoy, you'll do it more often.

Two-week on, two-week off diet 'is the best way to lose weight because it stops your metabolism slowing down'

  • People who do on and off diets lose more than those constantly dieting
  • It stops the body from finding ways to compensate for the lack of calories
By FIONA MACRAE

It could be the perfect solution for those who want to lose weight but lack willpower.
People who diet two-weeks on, two-weeks off lose more weight than those who deprive themselves week in, week out, a study found.
It is thought that the on-off approach stops the body from finding ways to compensate for the lack of calories and so ensures the pounds keep falling off.

Do both: Studies show that mixing up your diet with weeks or days with normal, balanced eating habits, means losing more weight

Have it all: The on-off approach stops the body from finding ways to compensate for the lack of calories and keeps the metabolism going
Professor Byrne believes they did better because their bodies didn’t switch to an energy-conserving survival mode.
Backing this up, she showed that resting metabolic rate, the amount of energy the body spends when ticking over, dropped less in the men on the on-off diet. This should have helped stop their weight loss from levelling off.
Professor Byrne, of the Bond Institute of Health and Sport in Queensland, also plans to check if intermittent dieting stops the body from trying to claw back the missed calories in other ways, such as by increasing appetite.

She said: ‘Given that long-term weight loss is a challenge we are interested in finding ways to overcome the biological and behavioural impediments to losing weight.
‘The results from our study are encouraging as they suggest providing “rest periods” can overcome some of the compensatory biological factors which reduce weight loss efficiency during continuous dieting.’
She added that the highly-popular 5:2 diet, in which slimmers drastically cut their calorie intake two days a week may have the same effect. However, there is a risk that those following the 5.2 diet will overeat on normal days because they are free to eat what they want.
In contrast, her diet is less extreme and contains instructions for both the ‘on’ and ‘off’ phases.
Professor Byrne said that she believes her diet plan ‘has the potential to appeal to almost anyone’.
But Carrie Ruxton, an independent dietician, questioned whether slimmers will want to go back to depriving themselves after having a fortnight off.

Dr Ruxton, spokesman for the Health Supplements Information Service also warned that many British adults are already low in vital vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium and vitamin D, and dieting can make it worse.
She said that while she is keen for people to lose weight, they need to get into good habits that they can maintain in years to come. She recommends thinking about vices, such as alcohol and chocolate, and cutting down on them, to get results.
Last year a survey revealed that slimmers often consume more than half their weekly calorie intake from Friday night to Sunday.
Away from the daily routine at work that helps them keep control of what they eat, they are snacking and drinking their way to an astonishing 10,000 calories, the study found.
Almost three-quarters of people trying to lose weight admitted over-indulging at the weekend, according to a poll, from diet firm Forza Supplements.

'How Zumba helped me lose eight stone'

She tried many diets and medication from her doctor, but once she came off them the weight piled back on.

A MUM-of-two has shimmied off more than eight stone by taking up Zumba classes — because she feared she would die young like her mum.
Jo Bradley, aged 41, piled on the weight after her mother, Ann, had a sudden fatal heart attack when she was just 47.
Ms Bradley, from Farnworth, sought comfort by bingeing on crisps, bread, cheese and massive portions of food.
But as she approached 40, weighing more than 23 stone and wearing a size 30, she was terrified she would not be around to see her daughters Lucy, aged 16, and Megan, aged 10, grow up.
So in May, 2011, when she was asked by her daughters’ dance instructor to try out a new Zumba class at Angels Dance and Fitness in Farnworth, she gave it a go and has since dropped down to a size 16.
Ms Bradley said: “My weight crept up on me in my early 20s. One day, when I was 21, I was having a conversation with my mum and she dropped down dead of a heart attack.
“She was really big. At the time it was horrific. That sent me on a spiral and I ate for comfort.
“I didn’t realise it was depression at the time. Mum was my best friend and I had no one to speak to about it. I am on my own so, if anything like that happened to me, what would happen to my kids?”
The Bolton News: A slim Jo Bradley with a pair of outsize jeans
Within 10 years, Ms Bradley had piled on the pounds, but she struggled to keep any weight she lost off permanently.“I was even prescribed a tablet from the doctor, which means that you can’t eat anything that is more than four per cent fat as it would make you very ill. I lost a couple of stone, but then put it back on once I came off them.”
But after starting the Zumba class in 2011, she has not looked back.
She said: “I went with some friends and I loved it. It’s about finding what you want to do and what you enjoy.”
Now Ms Bradley weighs in at 14st 12lbs — a size 16 — and has lost 8st and 2lbs in total.
She said: “I feel so much better. Someone said to me I have shrunk in size and grown in confidence. Before the weight loss the only place I could shop was Evans, Now I’m a 16.”
“I remember the day Megan said to me: ‘Mummy, I can fit my arms around you now.’ I nearly cried I was so happy.”
Melissa Finbarr-Smith, dance instructor at Angels, added: “I’m proud of Jo. She’s done it all by herself, through Zumba, without going down fad diets.”
