For Misty Shaffer, a 100-pound loss in weight is astonishing, and that's putting it nimbly. The Army wife shocked her husband of five years when the Afghanistan veteran returned home from a one-year overseas deployment in 2013. In a March 18 CNN report, sources caught up with the slimmer North Carolina woman, who shared her dieting and weight loss secrets that helped her shed 100-pounds of body weight.
You hear about miraculous stories of ordinary people slimming down and losing boatloads of fat. But Misty Shaffer's dramatic 100-pound weight loss story has multiple layers that are equally amazing on their individual merits.
Misty and her husband Larry, an Army specialist, have been romantically involved since high school. There, they fell in love, attended the prom together, and would later go on to wed.
Larry's bride has always carried a lot of weight and struggled with losing weight over the years, to no avail. Even after losing 60 pounds at one time with diet pills, Misty packed the weight back on. In fact, the 25-year-old, who stands at 5-feet-6 inches tall, ballooned to 300 pounds at her heaviest. However, when her spouse was given orders to deploy in the Middle East for a year, she suddenly got an epiphany.
I just sat in bed one night and was like, 'I can do this; I need to do this.'"
That's when Misty Shaffer embarked on a journey to lose 100-pounds. But first, she had to discover a way to keep it a secret for 365 days or more. After all, they used social media to communicate and photos were part of the long-distance exchanges.
Not to worry; the quick-thinking woman thought to only show pictures of herself from the neck up on Facebook and other photo/video-sharing sites.
As sources explain, the first three months were brutal and took a lot of will-power. As a supermarket secret shopper, Misty is often bombarded with food smells wafting through the air from the hot bar. And the fried chicken aroma took an added degree of will-power.
One year later, Misty shed half of her 254-pound frame and when her husband arrived at the airport to a gathering of family and friends, even he was speechless, as seen in the video above.
He admits that he wasn't able to lift his wife before he left, but 100-pounds of weight loss made hoisting her up into the air and planting a kiss a piece of cake, no pun intended.
Misty told reporters that the secret to her slimmer figure was smaller portion sizes, cutting out of sugary foods, fried foods, and going easy on her ice cream indulgence.
The Army veteran's daughter was only 2-years-old when he left and she was moved to tears when she saw him, but that soon faded as she and her dad became reacquainted.
Misty Shaffer's loss of 100 pounds wasn't the only surprise for her returning husband. The other was the purchase of a brand new home.
He marvels at how she managed to keep her milestones under wraps. He credits her will, something he seen long before they walked down the aisle together.
