Do You Gain or Lose Weight During Ramadhan?

Time: 8 pm. Place: A gym in Muscat: I was training with weights when I happened to look at the mirror across the gym floor. Strangely, I couldn’t see myself in it and almost stopped mid-exercise, only to realise that the person in black staring at me was actually me! A leaner, fitter, more shapely me, a me I had forgotten.
I know you must be grinding your teeth in annoyance. But believe me, I would have too, at anyone who was so depraved as to go to the gym and flaunt the results during Ramadhan.
Readers this is Abdullah al Ghadhani who lost more than 8 kg ever since Ramadhan started this year. “This is an ideal chance for those who want to lose weight and stay fit and detoxify themselves, as sedentary lifestyle during Ramadhan can take heavy toll on your health and fitness goals,” he says, with a big smile.
Ghadhani spends at least two hours working out — on an empty stomach and with no water. “It’s a good way to a stay fit and cutting weight miracle,” he says. He usually does cardio and weightlifting exercises.
Experts say that citizens and expatriates who fast during the Holy month of Ramadhan can loose weight quickly. A change in your workout habits and diet makes it possible to train without burdening your system or jeopardising your fast, experts say.
But those who are fasting are urged to do so with care and to consider the effect on their bodies of having had no food or water during the day. “However, exercising without having food or liquids for a long period of time is not ideal for everybody,” said Julie, a nutritionist at the private hospital. “The sugar levels are very low and one can get very thirsty — exercises, even if it’s just walking, can make one more tired.”
