When Pat Barone was trying to lose weight, the very people she looked to for support — her friends — seemed to be sabotaging her efforts.
Questions like, 'Is that all you're going to eat?' were just the beginning. "Before long, your food buddy is baking you cookies or showing up at your apartment with a bottle of wine," looking for a shoulder to cry on, said Barone, 58, of Madison, Wis.
As Barone kept dropping weight, however, she also lost some friends, something she now sees as a bonus. "I realized my weight loss was a test for my relationships — some made it; some didn't," said Barone, who lost 95 pounds more than a decade ago and now counsels others as a health coach.
