Energy drink sales are skyrocketing: from 2011 to 2012 they grew by 14 percent, a bigger jump than any other beverage category! That's not too surprising--who doesn't want to catch a second (or third) wind?
But are some drinks better than others? Here we take a look at the calories, sugar and caffeine in some of the most popular energy drinks on the market.
The Best: McDonald's Coffee
(large, 16 oz., black): 0 calories, 0 g carbohydrate, 0 g sugar, 133 mg caffeine

How Your Genes Can Help You Fit into Your Jeans

How Your Genes Can Help You Fit into Your Jeans

Diet fads are a dime a dozen, but it often seems as though there’s no one-size-fits all plan for fitting into your ideal pants size. That may be about to change, thanks to a pioneering study from the University of Southern California (USC) aimed at identifying the genetic triggers that determine which dietary regimen is best for each individual person.
Study authors Sean Curran and Shanshan Pang believe that they have pinpointed a package of genetic material that makes individuals more nimble when responding to different diets.
“These studies have revealed that single gene mutations can alter the ability of an organism to utilize a specific diet,” says Curran in a USC press release. “In humans, small differences in a person’s genetic makeup that change how well these genes function could explain why certain diets work for some but not others.”

Red and Heart Shaped Fruits For Healthy Heart

Celebrate the ultimate red month -February, with Vitamin C and anti-oxidant rich heart-shaped food, says a nutritionist.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 600,000 people die of heart diseases each year in the United States. The country observes February as the American Heart month  and National Cherry month to promote cardio-vascular health.
Katie Eliot, Assistant professor of Nutrition and Dietetics, Saint Louis University, said it is the perfect time to start eating red and heart-shaped fruits and vegetables for a healthy living. "Being red and heart shaped can be a tip off that some foods are good for your heart, " says Eliot in a news release.
Research shows heart-shaped foods are great sources of anti-oxidants that release free-radicals, which in turn shield against heart....

Are Late Nights Making You Gain Weight?

Are late nights making you gain weight?

By Lindsay Westley for Eatingwell Magazine
New research is bolstering how important sleep is for a healthy weight. When you're awake between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., you're more likely to take in extra calories, says a study from the University of Pennsylvania. People ate an average of 553 more calories when they were kept awake until the early morning. But a lack of sleep affects more than just late-night eating. Next time you're tempted to burn the midnight oil, resist the urge. Here's why:
1. You chow down in the morning.
When you're groggy in the morning, you're more likely to eat more. Sleep-deprived participants reported being hungrier in the morning and ate larger portions at breakfast and for snacks the next day compared to participants who slept 8 hours. Researchers think that just one night of total sleep deprivation prompts you to eat more by boosting ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates your appetite.

Snacking Mistakes that Can Wreck Your Diet

Snacking Mistakes That Can Wreck Your Diet

I am a bona fide snack lover. I always have snacks in my desk drawer at work, a piece of fruit in my purse and a bag of almonds in my car. Smart snacking-choosing healthy foods in portions of 200 calories or less if you're trying to lose or maintain weight-can provide instant hunger relief and be a great way to add nutrients to your diet. The right choices can help fill you up for fewer calories and power you through the day.
But poor snacking habits can cause you to eat too many calories and do a number on your waistline. Americans now consume on average more than two snacks a day and a recent study found that snacking may make up one-fourth of our daily calories. Here are four easy solutions to common snacking mistakes:
1. You Nosh on Empty Calories.
Chips, candies, cookies are devoid of nutrients, don't ..........

14 Reasons to Ditch Diet Soda

14 Reasons to Ditch Diet Soda
Before you take another sip of that aspartame-laden diet soda, here are 14 reasons to rethink that drink:
1.  Only one year after aspartame was approved by the FDA, its own task force learned that some of the original data showcasing aspartame’s safety had been falsified to hide results showing animals fed aspartame had developed seizures and brain tumors. The artificial sweetener was never recalled.
2.  Ironically considering its name and reputation as a “diet” drink, drinking diet soda is more likely to make a person fat.  It is linked to a 34% increase of metabolic syndrome, along with its telling symptoms of high cholesterol and abdominal obesity.  Just two cans of diet soda daily has been linked to a 500% increase in waist size.
3.  Aspartame has been linked to the formation of various types of cancer.  According to Randall Fitzgerald, author of The Hundred-Year Lie, some of the cancers linked to aspartame consumption include:  brain, liver, lung, kidney and lymphoreticular cancer.

Healthy Living: Tips for eating healthier snacks

posted: Tuesday, January 28, 2014 4:47 pm
StatePoint - With so much junk food available on store shelves these days, it’s important to take a step back from time-to-time and evaluate what a family eats - especially during snack time.
Here are a few ways to make sure everyone in the family gets healthy vitamins and minerals during snack time:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is important for strengthening immunity. Whenever kids gather in large groups, such as in the classroom, at after-school, activities, or on the monkey bars, germs have a tendency to travel. But a regular dose of vitamin C can help keep kids cold and flu-free.
With that in mind, hydrate kids with orange juice or lemonade instead of soda. For snacks, try kiwi, citrus fruits and slices of bell pepper.
Calcium
It’s almost impossible to cut out all sweets and treats, particularly when kids are involved! So rather than saying “no” to something delicious, ensure the sweet...

6 proven ways to lose the weight for good

(ABC News) -- "We've all heard it a million times: In order to lose weight, just burn more calories than you consume. Simple math, right? Yeah, unless you live in the real world—the one with deadlines and cronuts. Only one in five dieters are successful at losing—and keeping off—10 percent of their body weight, according to the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR). "You're battling your biology—your body reacts to dieting by burning fewer calories—as well as your emotions and your environment, where there are way too many temptations," explains Robert Kushner, MD, director of the Center for Lifestyle Medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine."

But getting help can make all the difference. Brand-new obesity-treatment guidelines from the American Heart Association, the Obesity Society and the American College of Cardiology say that the best way to lose weight is to work with a trained health-care professional. And just over half of the successful losers tracked by the NWCR sought outside help.

In fact, with the right tools and

5 thing to do when when health resolutions fail

By the third week of January, more than 46 million Americans admit they're struggling with their healthy resolutions, according to a survey by Evolution Fresh. If you're one of them, all is not lost. Instead of throwing in the towel completely, try any one of these ideas to get back on the wellness track:
1. Ditch the scale. You are more than “your number,” but when you weigh yourself, that can be hard to remember. More often than not, people who weigh themselves tend to do so too frequently and feel defeated, judged and inadequate. Your health does not fluctuate day-to-day like the number can. Remember that by definition, weight is simply the measure of gravitational force keeping you on planet Earth. I'm all for measuring and tracking, but there are healthier things worth tracking like duration and frequency of exercise, hours of sleep, number of times you stopped yourself from emotional eating, and all the great things you do for yourself and others.
[Read: The Case for Never Weighing Yourself Again.]
2. Fall in love with your fridge. At least once a year, your fridge needs a good, deep clean. Take everything out, wipe down the shelves, wipe off bottles and jars, check expiration dates, and toss anything that's past due. When you put the food back in, make it more organized. Keep vegetables together in the crisper drawer and jellies and jams on the same rack in the fridge, and group your fruits together. Make a list of what you already have and then look online for new, healthy recipes that will let you use some of the things you forgot you had. A cleaner, leaner fridge helps make mealtimes easier to handle, and can keep fresh, healthier food more readily available.

HEALTHY LIVING: Is this diet for me?

Back in the news after a positive study printed in the New England Journal of Medicine – here we are again – wondering how we can eat more like Cretans.  Eat delicious with health benefits.

First and foremost – bump up your fruit and non-starchy vegetable intake.  New recommendations are saying nine to 11 servings a day.  That’s right, a day.  Many people get one, per week.  These new recommendations sound insane but the serving sizes are small.  Salad for instance.  One cup is a serving.  A main course salad then can have nearly four to five servings.  For a cooked or raw vegetable – a half a cup.  For fruit:   half a cup of fresh fruit, a quarter cup of dried fruit, a small piece.  See how fast that nine to 11 disappears?  And your waistline with it.

Should Runners Supplement For Weight Loss?

Weight loss may never be as easy as taking a pill, but a few supplements can help you shed fat a bit more easily.
If any of the dozens of different kinds of weight-loss supplements on the market worked — I mean really worked — then two-thirds of American adults would not be overweight or obese. It’s that simple. When any type of supplement lives up to its promises, it does not remain a secret or a marginal product that consumers cycle on and off as wave after wave of suckers falls for the testimonials, fake science and celeb recomends it doesn’t do anything, and moves on.
That’s why nearly every weightlifter takes creatine. It works and everyone knows it. But as much as you might hope to discover some supplement out there that makes weight management easy, there is no creatine equivalent in the weight-loss market. In fact, the more you look to or rely on supplements for weight loss, the less likely it is that you will succeed in weightloss because every product you try will fail to meet your expectations, but also because your “magic bullet” mentality will distract you from the measures that really work: eating healthy, training consistently, avoiding overeating, and so forth.
That said, I do believe there are a few supplements that runners seeking weight loss should consider taking. It’s a short list, but some products can slightly enhance the results you get from the measures mentioned above in certain circumstances. These supplements are not magic bullets, nor are they necessary for the achievement of one’s ideal racing weight; however each is worth considering.

Carole Whitfield is half the woman she used to be.
Her weight increased to 15stone 7lbs as she binged on sugary and fatty foods.
But she finally decided to do something about it when she lost her mum Catherine at the age of 69.
Now, having dropped from a size 20 to a size 8, the former pastry chef is encouraging others to do the same and has become a Slimming World consultant.
Carole, 47, says she has battled with her weight most of her adult life and her mum, a qualified nurse, would often warn her about the dangers of being overweight, especially in light of their family history of high blood pressure and diabetes.

5 Common Diet Mistakes to Avoid

It's the new year, and we are still in January, so I know many of you are continuing to work towards your resolutions. I'd like to help you get off on the right foot by telling you about five common diet mistakes that can be a huge barrier to weight loss and should thus be avoided. These diet mistakes are ones that I have learned in the last 15 years of experience as a registered dietitian and after helping more than 2,500 people meet their weight goals. So don't set yourself up for failure. As I always say: Stop dieting. Start living!
1. Not Paying Attention to Stress
In our focus on calories in/calories out, we've tended not to notice the connection of stress to weight gain and the link between stress hormones like cortisol and fat retention. The reality of modern life is that it is going to be pressured and hurried. That's simply the reality for most of us. But within that framework, we ca...

Will colder temperatures help you lose weight?

A new study looking at the science of cold weather and calories found lowering the thermostat by a few degrees may help you burn fat.
According to research published in Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, slightly lowering the temperature activates an increase in your body’s metabolic rate, which burns calories.
Dr. Christopher Ochner, an obesity specialist at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, joined the “CBS This Morning” co-hosts to discuss the finding and how being a little chilly can help reduce your waistline.
Ochner said that this finding really has to do with the fact that body weight is “determined by calories in and calories out.”

New survey proves if women ditch their partner then they'll lose weight too

Experts have come up with a revolutionary new way for women to lose weight - ditch their husband or boyfriend.
A new study reveals that women who are happiest with their partners are the ones who put on most weight.
Statistics appear to prove they gain seven pounds over the first year of a new relationship because they eat more when they are content with life.
By contrast, men tend to lose more weight when they are happy with 39% saying they shed an average of 4.1lbs during the first year of a relationship.

ASK A TRAINER: 'What Exercises Do You Recommend for Someone With Bad Feet trying to Lose Weight?' Read more about ASK A TRAINER: 'What Exercises Do You Recommend for Someone With Bad Feet

"I have to lose weight but my feet are bad and I am having trouble walking especially when you have to be on your feet to make a living. Any weight lifting chair exercise you can recommend if any? Thanks for you help."--- Elsa F., Hackettstown, NJ
Hi, Elsa. Thank you so much for your question. I moved this question to the top of the list because, at one time or another, so many folks, myself included, run into some sort of problem with our feet. I know all too well how a job that forces you to remain upright for the better part of your time on the clock can cause your poor, tired dogs to not just bark but howl at the end of your workday. While you are working on getting yourself down to fighting weight, you might want to ask your doctor about inserts for your shoes. I can tell you from experience they can be a game changer.
You are right that excess weight will exacerbate the discomfort your job causes your feet. Taking the initiative to lose weight is commendable and you are smart to be using strength training as it is a more efficient way to burn calories than traditional calorie and putting on lean muscle mass will elevate your metabolism all day long. Good on you for even asking this question.

Could Turning Down the Thermostat Help You Lose Weight?

By
HealthDay Reporter
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 22, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Could your warm and cozy home be hindering your weight-loss efforts?
Dutch researchers say keeping temperatures a little chillier at home and the office might be an additional weapon in the fight against obesity.
"What would it mean if we let our bodies work again to control body temperature?" said study author Dr. Wouter van Marken Lichtenbelt, an associate professor in the department of human biology at Maastricht University Medical Center.
In the new study, his team explored whether frequent exposure to mild cold temperatures would boost the body's energy expenditure. In other words, would peoples' metabolisms ratchet up a notch -- burning more calories -- if they lived on the cool side?

Psychological tricks to help you lose weight

The formula for losing weight couldn’t be simpler: Consume fewer calories than you require, which means eat less and/or exercise more.
To lose around half a kilo there needs to be a deficit of roughly 3,500 calories; so, for example, burning an extra 500 calories a day — or consuming 500 fewer calories a day — will result in the loss of about 500 grams in a week.
However, while the maths is simple, getting there seems far from easy. And thus comes a slew of miracle supplements ("burn fat fast without even trying!"), fad diets (may we offer you a binding corset or surgically-attached tongue patch?) and fancy gizmos (hello, Japanese diet goggles).
But the truth is, losing weight takes work. That said, interesting research has revealed that some simple tricks can make the work a little easier; specifically, creating small obstacles and changing cues.

Now a growing number of websites promise to help you win hundreds, and possibly even thousands of dollars, betting on your weight loss.

A year ago, Bruce Laughlin of Canton began hitting the gym, making good on a bet on HealthyWage.com that he would reach his weight loss goals.

"Jan. 1 of last year, I was 219 pounds," he said. "Today, I'm 174."

Laughlin tripled his money by losing 45 pounds, taking home a $1,000 check, plus another $300.

"You put a little bit of your money up front and if you achieve your goals, specific goals, in the end you get more of your money back than what you put in," he said.

"It actually isn't gambling because you're in total control over your outcome," explained Jim Thomson, Product Director at HealthyWage.com

On that site, you can win up to $10,000.  Meanwhile, on DietBetter.com, you can bet on losing 4 percent of your body weight in four weeks.
