WAUSAU — Mandy Wright was an English teacher at Horace Mann Middle School when she took advantage of a free health care assessment through the Wausau School District’s health insurance package.
“It was three years ago in the fall,” Wright said. “It was one of those assessments that include blood pressure, weight, basic things.”
The medical worker conducting the assessment told Wright that she was obese.
“I said, ‘What? Nobody told me,’” Wright said. “I mean, I knew I was heavy, but obese?”
That wake up call spurred Wright, 36, to lose 40 pounds, through a combination of increasing her exercise levels and watching her calorie intake. But in 2012, she decided to run for the 85th Assembly District seat, and was elected as state representative for the Wausau area and southeast Marathon County. The shift from teacher with regular hours to a state official with an erratic schedule and plenty of travel has meant she has gained some of the weight back.
