Come
January, as the holiday sugar high subsides, we plan to publish a
series of stories online and a special section in The
Oregonian about getting and staying fit. Such projects don't happen
overnight, though, so this week my days are filled with interviews
with the health and fitness professionals to whom we've turned for
advice on diet,exercise, sleep, stress management and staying
motivated.
This
morning I spoke with Pam Evans, a dietitian with Legacy Good
Samaritan's Weight and Diabetes Management Institute.
She
doesn't make losing weight or turning around bad eating habits out to
be an easy task but she certainly makes change sound doable.
Evans
shares stories about strategies and tricks her patients use to reach
their eating and fitness goals – like the one about the nurse fed
up with the endless and constantly tempting supply of treats in the
break room at her workplace. To push herself back from the cookie
tray, she started imagining that every homemade treat had been made
by someone who hadn't washed his or her hands.
"She
had this bacteria-riddled picture of this food in her head,"
Evans says. "That worked."
