Gastric sleeve surgery is a relatively new type of bariatric surgery, and Cone Health Bariatric and Wellness Services began offering this procedure as an option for patients a little over a year ago.
This procedure is quickly becoming a popular choice for bariatric surgery candidates, as it is now covered the same as the Lap Band and gastric bypass surgeries on most insurance plans.
During a gastric sleeve procedure, 75 to 85 percent of the stomach is removed, leaving a small vertical space in the shape of a sleeve. The portion removed produces hormones that curb hunger, so the result is a reduced desire to eat.
