Kapil Sharma to shed weight for YRF's Bank Chor

With two episodes of his stand-up comedy show per week and an impending feature-film debut looming over his head, India's No.1 comic entertainer Kapil Sharma is currently going through the most hectic time of his life.

The irregular hours and the erratic schedules have taken their toll on his health.

And now Kapil has a nutritionist accompanying him to all his shootings, as he needs to lose weight for his feature-film debut next month.

Says Kapil, "My schedules have gotten so jampacked that I just snatched sleep and food whenever I could. But I've decided health comes first. I've got a guy to control my food intake. The trouble is, he feeds me boiled vegetables for dinner. But then after that when I'm on my own I end up cheating and snacking on bread and omelette while shooting. So I'm not losing as much weight as I'd like to."

Fortunately Kapil's back problem has been taken care of. "I've been regularly working out and doing back exercises. So the back problem is gone. But nowadays I've a shoulder pain."

Kapil is fighting a desperate battle with his schedules. "I need to create a bank of episodes of my show before I start shooting for my film from May 15. I can't run back-and-forth from the film set to the shooting of the show. They're two completely different disciplines. And I can't allow them to clash. Stand-up comedy comes as naturally to me as breathing. But film acting is an entirely new experience for me. I've to give it my hundred percent."

Regrettably contrary to plans, the channel has refused to cut down the frequency of Comedy Nights With Kapil by half.

Says Kapil, "The channel says the TRPs will suffer if we cut down the episodes. Luckily for me I got an unexpected reprieve when the first schedule of my film Bank Chor was shifted from April to May. I am racing against time to create a bank of episodes, so I can complete one schedule of Bank Chor without any interruption."

Marca Katz of Wayland: Get fit for spring

Read more Spring has finally arrived, and along with warmer temperatures comes the shedding of that top layer of clothing. You may be finding those extra five to 10 pounds that crept on during the winter months more difficult to hide, and thoughts quickly turn to how you’re going to lose them. You may also have heard about, and probably even tried one (a few?) of the many weight loss plans popular amongst your friends or advertised online, but here you are again, in need of another downsize.
Whatever type of diet or eating program you choose, keep in mind that almost all will help you achieve varying degrees of success at losing weight in the beginning, however maintaining this weight loss poses the biggest challenge.
Below, I have outlined four key strategies that, when incorporated into any long-term weight loss/maintenance program, will enable you to safely and effectively keep the weight off.

1. Keep a journal of everything you eat. This sounds like a lot of work, but once you get into the habit, it should only take few minutes a day. Studies have found that people who journal their food throughout the day lose double the amount of weight than those who don’t. Your food journal will not only highlight the things you want to change, but will clearly show you what’s working well! You can either carry a small notebook to jot down your food each time you eat, or use one of the online apps, such as "Lose It," "My Fitness Pal" or "Spark People," all easily accessible with an iPhone.
2. Don’t wait until you’re hungry to eat. This may seem counterintuitive to weight loss, especially if you’ve been taught to listen to your body’s signals for eating. However waiting to eat when hungry leads to overeating, and reaching for quick, less healthy options. Plan out your meals and snacks for each day in advance, eating every two-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours throughout the day. You will find yourself appropriately hungry at each meal/snack, and the need to overeat will be gone just knowing you will eat again soon.

3. Have some type of lean protein at each meal/snack. It’s important to eat a diet that includes a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein and fat, however protein is more satisfying than the other two and will keep you feeling full longer. It is virtually impossible to sustain any weight loss program if you are constantly fighting hunger, so including lean sources of protein every time you eat will alleviate this problem. Fat-free Greek yogurt, lowfat cheeses, nuts and beans are all wonderful examples and easy to incorporate into your diet.
4. Keep active throughout the day, not just at the gym. Exercise is fantastic for many reasons, but alone as a weight loss tool it’s not going to get you to your goal. Attempt to stay moving throughout your day, which will keep your metabolism soaring in ways that a one-hour workout cannot. Taking the stairs, walking during your lunch break, biking to work, or simply standing more instead of sitting are all easy ways to accomplish this goal. You will find that any weight loss plan will be more effective if your body is in the habit of moving.

6 Dieting Rules You'll Love to Follow

Don't eat this, stay away from that — following a diet can seem like a total killjoy. If you're feeling depressed about how restrictive your diet is, here are some proven weight-loss rules you'll welcome with open arms.

  1. Dig into a big breakfast: Skipping breakfast to save calories? That's a big mistake because eating breakfast actually jump-starts your metabolism. Your first meal of the day should include protein to reduce sugar cravings, and fiber to satiate your hunger. A veggie omelet, fruit smoothie with spinach, oatmeal with fruit and nuts, or Greek yogurt with fresh fruit are excellent choices.
  2. Say yes to carbs: Before you get too excited, know that I'm not talking about bagels. Simple carbs, made from enriched white flour, offer little nutritional value and more calories than you need. Stick to complex carbs like quinoa, brown rice, and oats, as well as foods made from whole grain flour such as pasta and crackers — of course, you still need to be mindful of portion sizes.) Complex carbs are not only full of fiber that keep hunger at bay, they also contain valuable vitamins and minerals your body needs such as vitamins B6 and E and iron.
Keep reading for four more weight-loss rules you'll love following.
  1. Eat between meals: No need to feel starved all day! Aside from your three main meals, schedule a morning and afternoon snack to keep hunger at bay. Stick to munching on snacks that are 150 calories or under, and use your two snacks to fill nutritional holes in your diet. Not sure what to eat? Check out these 150-calorie snack ideas.
  2. Set a time to indulge each day: Whether it's chocolate you long for or some crunchy, salty chips, choose a time each day where you can splurge on a little something you crave. Keep it under 50 calories and really take the time to savor it. Satisfying your edible desires is a great way to prevent breaking down and binging on huge portions of unhealthy foods later.
  3. Enjoy a meal out: Losing weight doesn't mean you have to give up eating at your favorite restaurants. Since portion sizes are usually enormous and dishes are also high in calories, bring a friend and split apps, entrĂ©es, and yes, even dessert. Here are even more tips on how to eat healthy at a restaurant.
  4. Have a glass of wine: If you're trying to lose weight, kicking back with an adult beverage may seem out of the question. While beer and cocktails aren't usually diet-friendly, one five-ounce glass of red wine is only about 100 calories. Since it's not a huge calorie-buster and red wine offers antioxidants, enjoy one small glass a few times a week.

BIG CHANGE: Ditching The Diet To Lose Weight

From surgeries to supplements and dozens of different diets, Americans spend more than $20 billion a year trying to lose weight.
Studies show many of us try four to five weight loss plans a year. Health experts say yo-yo dieting could be dangerous in the long run, and you may want to ditch the diet and make a big change in your life instead.
Every step counts on Joshua Wetmore’s weight loss journey. “I’m like this is not good. I’m getting really big,” he says.
Like most, this isn’t his first attempt at shedding pounds. “I lost weight. I got down to 200 pounds, but I could never break the 200 pounds,” Wetmore adds. “I kind of got to a plateau, and I was like ok, I’ll do this on my own. We’ll, that didn’t work and I was back up.”
This January, he didn’t need a scale to know he needed a change.
“When I went down to check the tire, my pants ripped.”
The father of two signed up for Weight Watchers at work. He now tracks what he eats and how much he moves with his Fitbit. “It says how many steps you’ve taken. I’ve taken 4,616, so who knows if I’ll get to 10,000 today.”
He’s down 33 pounds in three months and is determined to keep going and keep it off this time. “This is the 2nd time I’ve paid to lose weight. I’m sticking with it,” he says.
From magazines to television, we’re constantly bombarded with ways to lose weight. It can be tough weeding through all that information. But, dietitians say there are a few signs a diet may be bad in the long run.
“Yo-yo dieting, especially with these people attempting diet after diet is very hard on their heart because you’re at risk for cardiac arrest for one and also at risk for diabetes,” Registered Dietitian and Iowa State University Instructor Alison St. Germain says.
St. Germain says diets sounding too good to be true probably are. She says watch out for plans promising quick weight loss in a short amount of time. Diets low in calories or carbs can actually slow your metabolism, those cutting out entire food groups can be a problem and she says juice or detox diets can be dangerous.
The trouble is when people can’t maintain the weight loss. “With each unsuccessful diet, it’s harder and harder to lose that weight because of the sluggish metabolism is part of it,” St. Germain says.
Her advice: ditch the diet and change your motive. Focus on healthy habits instead of what you weigh.
“The goal is doing the things to feel good and healthy and the result is weight loss. So, it’s really a change in mindset,” she says.
She recommends you start by eating more fruits or vegetables. Strive for five to nine servings a day. Next, take more steps throughout the day. Around 10,000 is often the recommendation. And, stop stepping on the scale.
“People spend too much time worrying about the number on the scale, versus just how they are feeling because you can tell if you’ve gained just by how your clothes fit,” she says.
Wetmore likes the positive changes he’s made.
“I feel like I’m not going to rip my pants anymore. That’s a positive right there.” He knows his healthy journey isn’t over, but every step brings him closer.
St. Germain says you should also research the person promoting a diet. Celebs are often paid big bucks to back plans, and health or life coaches might make money by selling products.
She says Registered Dietitians pass a national exam after graduating and completing a six month internship. You can find them at hospital outpatient clinics and many grocery stores. And, they can help come up with healthy meal plans.
She also recommends the following evidence based resources to get you started:

Huma to lose weight for next?

Huma is reportedly working out to look slim for her next movie where she is paired with Varun Dhawan. The movie is said to go on floors in the coming months.
“Her character requires her to look slimmer. She might lose up to four-five kilos,” Hindustan Times quoted an insider as saying.
Looks like even the ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana’ has fallen prey to being figure conscious as she was earlier reluctant about not losing weight.
In an earlier interview to Times of India , Huma had said:“I grew up with good food all around me, I just can't resist it and this is the reason behind my weight gain. But I am seriously not interested in losing weight. I just want to stay fit and I gym regularly for that. And I don't think my weight will ever be a problem in my Bollywood career. Cinema today has changed. Real actresses, who can actually act, are in demand. You have Vidya Balan and Sonakshi Sinha as prime examples. It is only acting that matters, not the figure.”
Raghvan's next will also see Huma team up with her 'Gangs of Wasseypur' co-star Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The yet untitled project will hit the screens next year.

Lose that weight

FIJIANS need to take action and do something about their weight, says non-communicable disease national adviser Dr Isimeli Tukana.
"Being overweight and obese means that you are putting your weight and pressure on your heart and telling your heart to pump your heart harder when it's not supposed to be," Dr Tukana said at the launch of the Protex Hygiene month in Suva yesterday.
The hygiene month is an initiative of Colgate Palmolive Fiji Ltd in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
The month-long "Weight watch month" was also initiated with a 30-day fit challenge, emphasising the importance of looking after one's health.
The program is expected to teach people to reduce and normalise their body weight so they could have a stronger and better heart.

Weight Loss Lapsing, Learning and Moving On

Screen Shot 2014-04-20 at 7.16.08 PMEvery now and then somebody makes up her mind to lose weight and gets all the way to goal without a single lapse. While it’s possible that some people are able to set their mind to lose weight and stick tight to their plan, it’s not common.
Maybe you are one of those people who puts your mind to something and you follow through 100%. Funny thing about losing weight, the lapses aren’t a bad thing, They’re actually a good thing because
the learning which is necessary to maintain a loss happens during the lapses. When things go to smoothly you’re not learning how to live at goal, just how to get there!

Juice diet made me gassy

Dear Donovan
I have tried several weight loss programmes, which help at first, but since I tend not to be persistent, I can only blame myself. However, I noticed that the side effect of the last one was not pleasant. It causes you to pass a lot of gas. Even when you least expect, it is as if you are set on rapid. This can be very embarrassing, as you have no control over it. I had to stop the diet, which resulted in me putting back on the weight I had lost. Even so, I am still facing the frequent passing of gas. The diet I am referring to is the juice diet.
If you are serious about losing weight, you will have to start a personalised weight lost programme and stick to your programme over time. At first, I suggest you take a detailed look at why you need to lose weight. Is it your health, is it your looks, or is it that your clothes are not fitting you nicely? A weight loss programme is usually more effective when you have valid reasons to do it, otherwise it is easier to give up at the slightest signs of discomfort.
In succeeding at losing weight, your mind must be made up and your persistence must be of steel. A weak and unresolved mind usually does not achieve success at anything.
That aside, I am sorry to hear about your bad experience with your last diet. Flatulence can be a really annoying and painful experience. It mainly stems from the diet, because gas is a normal result of food breaking down in the digestive system. Some foods produce more gas because they are not entirely broken down in the system by our digestive juices. Usually bacteria ferments the undigested carbohydrates and gas is released in the process, therefore a diet high in carbohydrates and sugar and starches can produce a lot of gas. The bowels backing up can also produce regular amounts of gas and more so when you start a detox diet, for example, a juice diet.
However, juicing can be a perfect way to remove toxins/waste. Incorporating peppermint and ginger teas as well as papaya in your juice diet can significantly help with the flatulence in the initial stage. With time, given the fact that your body is being cleaned and with the combination of the food in your diet, the gassiness usually goes and so will the weight.
At this stage, I would suggest that you do the juice diet only one to two days per week initially, and the rest of the days you can try and cut back your carbohydrate intake and eat more fruits and vegetables. In addition, I also suggest you increase your activity/exercise. This will help to reduce your calorie intake and result in weight loss.
In a nutshell, the only sustainable way to achieve weight loss is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle programme and being involved in a proper diet and exercise regime.
I would suggest that you now make all the effort to lose the extra weight this time. Being overweight can affect many aspects of your life, for example, your health and your self-confidence. So get working at your weight loss programme. Good luck!

Healthy Living: Four reasons to go meat-free

Meat is a staple food in the majority of diets.

For some it can be hard to imagine eating an enjoyable meal without it.
But vegetarian, vegan and plant-based diets are now more popular than ever and with National Vegetarian week happening between May 19 and 25, why not try cooking a meat free meal yourself?
Here are four good reasons why you should.
Health benefits
A typical vegetarian diet consists of low-fat, high-fibre foods such as vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and grains which are all known to reduce the risks of suffering from certain cancers, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Popular meat substitutes such as tofu and Quorn are also much lower in saturated fat and high in protein, making them healthy alternatives to meat.
Environmentally friendly
Going vegetarian is an easy way to lower your own environmental impact.
More energy, land and water resources are required to farm and produce meat than to produce a vegetarian diet.
Farming animals is also believed to produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire worldwide transport system.
Cost-efficient
Ingredients like beans, grains, vegetables and pulses are generally cheaper than meat and can be easily prepared to make the same filling meals without the extra cost.
Stews, soups, casseroles and pasta dishes are all examples of meals that can be made using vegetarian ingredients alone, resulting in cheaper meals when compared to cooking them with meat

Animal welfare
A popular reason for many people who choose to eat a meat-free diet is animal welfare.
About two million land animals are slaughtered daily in the UK and although most are killed humanely, some people argue that they suffer fear, stress and are subjected to poor living conditions before slaughter.
By reducing the amount of meat and fish in your diet you can make a stand for improved farming conditions and help to conserve the fish in our oceans.
National Vegetarian Week, May 19 to 25
There’s no better time to get involved and try some vegetarian cooking for yourself.
Principal tutor of the Vegetarian Society’s cookery school Alex Connell said: “As part of National Vegetarian Week we have created seven new, easy meat-free recipes.
“I will be cooking a different one every day!
“My personal favourite is vegetarian sausage casserole. Cheap, healthy, filing and delicious!”

Starting over again

matzah
Passover! When the Almighty took us out of Egypt, he gave us freedom. But freedom doesn’t mean doing whatever we want, however we want, whenever we want.

Unfortunately, we generally become enslaved to our desires for food and overeating during the holidays.

But now, it is after the holiday, and our clothes don’t fit as they did just a few weeks ago.

But what can we do? And more importantly, how can we bring some permanence to our health and fitness regimens and not go through this process every single year?

If you need some incentive to find your way back to healthy habits, consider this. According to an article in the May 1,

Sunday 20th April 2014 Kim Kardashian in 'extreme dieting mode' ahead of wedding

Kim Kardashian has reportedly gone into "extreme dieting mode" in time for her wedding.
The 33-year-old reality TV star - who is following the high-protein Atkins diet - has banned any liquids apart from water entering her mouth in order to shift 5lbs before her and her fiancé Kanye West's big day next month.
A source told OK! magazine: "She doesn't really drink, but she likes a glass of red wine with dinner and coffee in the morning but her Atkins mania won't allow her those anymore. She won't even have a sip."
The brunette beauty - who has already lost 50lbs since giving birth to her daughter North last June - has been eating lean protein and green vegetables to help her achieve her slim physique........

Your wise guide to healthy living on the north shore

Health and diet crazes come and go, but a recent gluten-free trend appears to be gaining ground with large strides.
Recent popular books such as Wheat Belly and Grain Brain have helped fuel concerns about gluten and an over-use of it in the typical North American diet. Along with a link to weight gain, some information suggests gluten can also contribute to serious health issues.
According to the Mayo Clinic website, gluten is a protein that is found in grains, such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). It is also found in many other products that are not bread related, including condiments and even makeup.
While the negative and positive effects of a gluten-free diet are still being debated, at least in the media, gluten-free products are making more appearances in grocery and health food stores.
"It's just a protein and for most individuals that aren't sensitive, it's absolutely fine to include gluten," says Diana Steele, longtime West Vancouver resident and registered dietitian (seen in the photo below). "But a lot of people have thought, well, this is a trend I can hop onto."..........

Diets at Easter mean keeping chocolates under wraps

Easter, chocolate, diet, women, Easter eggsAh, the true meaning of Easter: celebrating the rebirth of all that is good in the world, marking the coming of a season of hope and gorging on overpriced chocolate until there is no room left in your insides and it is forced out through the pores. How I love it.

There is, however, one phrase guaranteed to put a wrinkle in the nose of the Easter Bunny and send him scurrying away as if threatened with a myxomatosis-laced Creme Egg. That phrase is: “Darling, I’m on a diet.” Just what is one supposed to do if your nearest and dearest is in the throes of a serious get-fit campaign and has vowed to lose about one-third of their body weight? It’s like walking on egg shells.

I can tell you from long personal experience that broaching the matter of Easter with.....

The skinny on holiday dieting By David Lindeman

I love Easter. I love Thanksgiving and Christmas, too. It’s just the weeks after the holidays that are a problem.
There is one thing that all these events have in common. Food. Lots of food. Since I try to be as polite as possible, I would never dream of offending anyone by not eating all the great food people spend so much time making for holidays. Lots of food.
This turns out to be a like staying out on the beach too long or staying up that extra hour even though you know you have to go to work the next morning — it feels good at the time, but you end up paying for it later.
I know that this week many people will be like me and will be trying to get rid of the extra calories we built up over the weekend. So I did a little research. Here are our options, according to the latest diet crazes:
• The Paleo Diet. The concept here is that we should all eat lots and lots of protein and stay away from carbohydrates and other problem foods. This is the way cavemen ate, which for some reason seems to be a good thing. Since there no longer are wooly mammoths around, we’ll just have to do with steak and hamburger.
Of course, cavemen are pretty much extinct. In fact, scientists who know about this kind of thing say most of them lived to be only about 30 years old or so, which is hardly a ringing endorsement for a red meat diet. Maybe they were skinny, but it probably was because they spent half their time running away from sabre-tooth tigers and other scary creatures.
• The Potato Diet. Hah! You thought potatoes and other carbs were bad for you! Not so fast, caveman.

"Instead of making a traditional Hollandaise sauce (a sinfully rich combination of egg yolks and melted butter that hurts my heart just thinking about it), I've lightened things up using Greek yogurt. I don't think you're going to miss 'real' Hollandaise. This is going to become your go-to sauce for life."

Curb your hunger

Dear Pharmacist: I am 90 pounds overweight and just began taking the medication Xenical. Is there another drug that works better than this? Are there any supplements you recommend?
— J.M., Dallas
Answer: Kudos to you for getting on the path to wellness. This topic could encompass an entire book and if there was one easy answer it would be great, but there’s not. There isn’t a medication that I recommend for weight loss, although the orlistat (Xenical) is commonly prescribed to assist in weight loss.
It is not a fat burner. It is a fat blocker. It reduces intestinal fat absorption by blocking an enzyme called lipase.
One way to prevent fat in the first place is to keep your cortisol levels down. Cortisol will rise in the presence of chronic stress, fear and grief and the hormone contributes to belly fat. You can evaluate cortisol and other adrenal hormones with urine and saliva tests.

There’s probably no faster way to lose weight than to just eat meats, veggies and nuts/seeds and drink only water, tea or coffee.

Weight-loss drive starts in Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH — Yogurt parfaits with granola and berries topped the menu Wednesday as town leaders encouraged people to get fit.

The Foundation for a Fit Future began its “Tons Off Tahlequah” campaign with a luncheon featuring the parfaits and turkey croissants, served at the Northeastern State University event center. The campaign challenges Tahlequah-area residents to lose 30,000 pounds — 15 tons — by March 2015.

“Our goal was to select a menu with healthy options,” said Dr. Laura Boren, NSU’s vice president of student affairs. “We wanted to do what we were challenging the audience to do, which is to eat healthy and exercise.”

“Enjoy your healthy lunch,” said Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, the keynote speaker, as he detailed his city’s efforts to encourage fitness.

Cornett recalled seeing a list that ranked Oklahoma City among the most obese cities in the U.S. He said he wanted to know why.

“We had a wonderful quality of life if you happened to be a car,” he said. “We had created a business model perfect for fast-food restaurants.”

He said that on New Year’s Eve 2007, he stood in front of elephants at the Oklahoma City Zoo and declared: “This city is going on a diet.”

Cornett challenged the city’s residents to lose 1 million pounds. The city set up a “This city is going on a diet” website, on which people could sign up for the program and track their progress.

“We lost 250,000 pounds in the first year,” Cornett said.

The campaign prompted changes in the city’s infrastructure, including more sidewalks, bike lanes and a downtown park.

Weight loss also brought economic development as more people moved to Oklahoma City, Cornett said. The rising population brought more jobs, he said.

The Foundation for a Fit Future — a partnership among the city of Tahlequah, NSU, the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians — has a similar website for its Tons Off Tahlequah campaign.

Shawn Arthur, vice president of Osiyo Communications, said the website eventually will enable people to sign up for the challenge and follow their progress. He said people around Tahlequah also are encouraged to sign up.

Tahlequah Mayor Jason Nichols said the city is adding facilities and programs to encourage fitness. They include the Anthis Brennan Sports Complex under construction west of town. It will have a swimming pool, ball fields, tennis courts and a playground. The city also is working with the Cherokee Nation to build a splash pad downtown.

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians encourages people to visit its 80-acre facility, which includes walking trails, Chief George Wickliffe said.

“I grew up in these hills,” Wickliffe said. “We had rolling hills and dirt roads. We walked daily up and down the hollers. It was natural for us to stay healthy.”

8 Crazy Obesity Triggers

Researchers are finding connections between everyday chemicals and the bulging-belt-line epidemic.
By Leah Zerbe, Rodalenews.com

There's more to the obesity epidemic than eating too many hot wings and excess sitting. Certainly, poor food choices, particularly too much sugar and sweeteners, and a lack of exercise are major pieces of the obesity puzzle. But a landmark 2002 study, published in theJournal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, found the obesity epidemic paralleled the increase of industrial chemicals in the environment.
Now researchers are finding that exposures to certain common endocrine-disrupting chemicals--not just lifestyle choices--could be programming us for weight gain, diabetes, and related problems. "We have to acknowledge the fact that obesity is not just about will power, that it's not just all someone's fault," says developmental biologist Retha Newbold, MS, CT, of the National Institute of ..                             .read more   http://tinyurl.com/omx4avy

Conor, 21, has Down’s Syndrome and was born with two holes in his heart.
Signing up to Slimming World has not only helped him lose weight but has given him the confidence to put himself out there in the world.
Linda explained: “Last year I took Conor to the doctor because he wasn’t feeling well.
“Like a lot of children with Down’s Syndrome he had two holes in his heart when he was born and people with the condition are inclined to put on weight, which I wasn’t aware of.
“He was tired and not himself – his general health wasn’t great and I took him up for tests.
“Luckily there wasn’t anything seriously wrong but the GP just said to me he was very overweight.”
