Three weeks into the new year, if you're losing steam with your resolution to get in shape, don't put down the weights and pick up creams, pills, drops or powders that promise to drop your weight. There's a fat chance those products alone are your answer.
Claims that products can slim you down without your changing diet or exercise habits often aren't based in science, authorities warned recently as they announced cases against four marketers they accused of making incredible claims that weren't credible.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
The FTC says media (and you) should question ads that say:
• Causes weight loss of 2 pounds or more a week for a month or more without dieting or exercise
• Causes substantial weight loss no matter what or how much you eat
• Causes permanent weight loss even after you stop using product
• Blocks the absorption of fat or calories to enable you to lose substantial weight
• Safely enables you to lose more than 3 pounds per week for more than four weeks
• Causes substantial weight loss for all users
• Causes substantial weight loss by wearing a product on the body or rubbing it into the skin
