Take immediate action against hunger

Overweight and unable to stick to diets? Deepak Chopra suggests asking what you are hungry for

There has never been a more sedentary and overweight generation than ours. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that currently, 1.2 billion people worldwide are overweight. And Indians are certainly throwing their weight behind this statistic.

A recent report by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), a London-based think-tank, found that Indians figure frequently in the one in three adults who are overweight or obese, adding up to 1.46 billion across the world.

Future Diets, which has illustrated dietary trends in the developing world over the past 50 years, revealed that obesity had tripled — from 250 million to 904 million — between 1980 and 2008. In India, the percentage of obese and overweight rose from 9 per cent of the population in 1980 to 11 per cent in 2008.
