Healthbeat: Concerning restrictive eating

Many dieting programs, pills and advertisements promote rapid weight loss. Their messages of losing large amounts of weight in a short time have become the accepted way of thinking for many people. Unfortunately, this may lead to attempts at highly restrictive eating, which can cause some health concerns and may actually work against long-term weight control.
Reducing calorie intake can certainly be part of a weight loss goal, but it can become a negative if it is done in the extreme. A better plan would be to reduce calories by a more moderate amount and match it with daily reasonable physical activity. This would then lead to a steady loss of weight while establishing lifestyle habits that are more reasonable and could be maintained long-term.
